Kawasaki FX850V Maintenance Parts: Oil Filter, Air Filter & Spark Plugs

Posted by Outdoor Power LLC Service Team on

The Kawasaki FX850V is the 852cc big-block V-twin found on many 60" and 72" commercial zero-turns, including Toro Z Master 4000 and 5000 Series machines. For a full service you need two NGK BPR4ES $6.21 plugs, the 11013-7044 $32.78 / 11013-7045 $34.13 air filter elements, and the correct oil filter for your engine's spec — which is the one part people most often get wrong.

FX850V oil filter: why there's more than one answer

Kawasaki has used more than one oil filter on FX850V specifications over the years, and Kawasaki's own FX751V/801V/850V tune-up kits have shipped with different filters. We stock the two you're most likely to need: 49065-0724 $17.98 and 49065-7010 $18.48. To be sure, read the spec number off the engine decal (for example FX850V-BS08) and match it to the engine's parts list, or look up your mower in our Parts for My Machine tool.

FX850V air filter elements

The FX850V uses a two-stage canister: an outer element that catches most of the dust, and an inner safety element that protects the engine if the outer one fails. Our stocking numbers are 11013-7044 $32.78 and 11013-7045 $34.13. Replace the outer element whenever it's visibly loaded or damaged; replace the inner whenever you replace the outer a second time, or if it's ever dirty on the engine side.

Air filters are one of the top replacement parts on commercial zero-turns from our service department's repair records. Dusty mowing conditions destroy engines quietly — dirt that gets past a torn element wears rings and cylinders long before you notice smoke.

FX850V spark plugs

Two NGK BPR4ES plugs, replaced as a pair. If one cylinder runs cold (you'll feel it as a miss under load), pull both plugs and compare — oily, sooty or white plugs each point to different problems.

FX850V parts on Toro Z Master 4000 and 5000 mowers

On a Toro Z Master 4000 Series 60" with the 852cc engine (model 74004), Toro's parts list carries the engine service parts under Toro numbers: air filter elements 119-5944/119-5945, fuel filter 142-6949, oil filter KW10761 and spark plug 92-2153. Those machines also use the Toro 140-1240 20.5" high-flow blade $21.71 and 140-7994 pump drive belt $70.90 — see our Z Master 4000 parts guide.

FX850V service checklist

  1. Drain oil warm; replace the oil filter (spec-correct number).
  2. Refill with the grade in your manual — Kawasaki 20W-50 $13.25 or 10W-40 $14.01 depending on climate and spec.
  3. Replace both spark plugs.
  4. Replace the outer air element; inspect the inner.
  5. Replace the inline fuel filter; check the fuel pump pulse line and clamps.
  6. Blow debris off the cooling fins and screen — big V-twins run hot when packed with grass.

How to read your FX850V spec number

The decal on the blower housing shows the model and a spec code — for example FX850V-BS08. The letters and digits after the dash tell Kawasaki which carburetor, air cleaner, oil filter and fuel pump that engine left the factory with. Two FX850Vs on different mowers can need different filters, so keep a photo of the decal on your phone and use it every time you order.

Symptoms that point to each part

  • Loss of power in thick grass, black smoke: outer air element loaded — replace it and inspect the inner.
  • Miss or shake at full throttle: one plug fouled, or a plug wire/boot breaking down.
  • Dies after 20 minutes, restarts after sitting: fuel filter or fuel cap vent (see runs then dies).
  • Oil level rising or smelling of fuel: stop and get it diagnosed — fuel in the crankcase destroys bearings.

Keep a service kit on the shelf

If you run FX850Vs in a fleet, stock one set per machine: two BPR4ES $6.21 plugs, an outer and inner element (11013-7044 $32.78 / 11013-7045 $34.13), the spec-correct oil filter and a 49019-0031 $12.73 fuel filter. A full set costs less than one lost day of mowing.
