Lawn Mower Runs Then Dies? Fix the Fuel System in This Order

Posted by Outdoor Power LLC Service Team on

A mower that runs and then dies is starving for fuel far more often than it has an ignition problem. "Runs then stops" is the second most common complaint in our service records after "won't start." Work through the fuel system in this order — cheapest and most likely first.

Quick reference

What you need Part Fits / notes
Dies after a few minutes Fuel cap vent, fuel filter $7.66 Fuel flow
Dies under load / at full throttle Inline fuel filter $4.14, fuel pump, carb Fuel delivery
Surges then stalls Varnished carburetor — carb kit $20.08 or replacement Carburetor
Dies when hot Air filter, cooling fins, ignition coil Heat / ignition

1. Fuel cap vent

Gas caps are vented so air can replace the fuel the engine uses. When the vent clogs, the tank pulls a vacuum, fuel stops flowing, and the engine dies after a few minutes. Test: when it dies, loosen the cap. If it restarts and runs, replace the cap — Toro caps like 126-1789 $54.68 and 137-4127 $19.54 fit many models.

2. Fuel filter

The single most common fix. A partly plugged filter lets enough fuel through to idle but not to mow. Inline filters are cheap: the Rotary 13115 universal filter $7.66 is the fuel filter we install most on zero-turns (93 repair orders), with the Rotary 12950 $4.14 and Kohler's 24 050 13-S $15.79 close behind. Replace it at every tune-up.

3. Fuel line and old fuel

Ethanol fuel breaks down rubber line from the inside — look for cracks, soft spots or line that's collapsed where it bends. Then look at the fuel itself: gas older than about a month, especially stored over winter, gums up the carburetor. Drain it, refill fresh, and treat it with a stabilizer like Toro Premium Fuel Treatment $17.71 or Sta-Bil $27.00.

4. Carburetor

If fuel reaches the carb freely and the engine still surges and stalls, the carburetor's small passages are varnished. A rebuild kit or a replacement carb usually fixes it. On push mowers, Briggs & Stratton carb kits $20.08 and needle & seat kits $12.22 are among the most-installed carburetor parts in our records. For zero-turns, Toro carburetor kits like 127-9290 $53.20 and 136-7826 $149.02 cover many models — look up your engine to confirm.

5. Fuel shutoff solenoid and fuel pump

Many V-twins have a fuel pump and an electric shutoff solenoid on the carb. A weak pump or a sticking solenoid causes stalls under load. If the problem only shows up at full throttle in thick grass, check pump output and the pulse line before replacing the carb.

6. If it dies when hot

Check the air filter (a choked filter makes it run rich and stall), clean grass from the cooling fins and screen, and if it dies hot and won't restart until it cools, suspect the ignition coil.

Prevent it next season

  • Run stabilized fuel, or run the tank dry before storage.
  • Replace the fuel filter every season.
  • Keep a spare cap and filter for mowers you depend on.

Push mowers vs zero-turns

On push mowers (Briggs, Honda and similar), the usual culprits are a gummed float bowl and a sticking needle and seat, plus a dirty foam or paper air filter — Briggs air filters and carb kits top our push-mower repair records. On zero-turns, look first at the inline fuel filter, the fuel pump and the fuel shutoff solenoid, then the carburetor.

FAQ

Why does my lawn mower start and then die?
Usually fuel flow: a clogged fuel cap vent, a plugged fuel filter, old fuel, or a varnished carburetor. Check them in that order.
Why does my mower die when I hit thick grass?
Fuel delivery can't keep up at full load: a partly clogged fuel filter, weak fuel pump or dirty carburetor.
How do I test a fuel cap vent?
When the engine dies, loosen the cap. If it restarts and keeps running, the vent is blocked and the cap should be replaced.
